PLURIEL
University Platform for Research on Islam

Created in 2014, PLURIEL is an academic research network that fosters links between researchers working on Islam and the Christian-Muslim dialogue in relation to Eastern Christians. It also aims to encourage interaction between academics and people in society, particularly at the level of companies. The objective is to open up fields of research into Islam and to develop the methodological tools to avoid blockages.

The project is managed by Professor Michel Younès (Research group #1).

NHNAI
New Humanism at the time of Neurosciences and Artificial Intelligence

NHNAI is an action research project which, under the auspices of the International Federation of Catholic Universities (FIUC), aims to give communities of players in civil society the ability to hold a collective discussion on what it means to be human in the age of neurosciences and AI. NHNAI works on collecting, presenting and communicating the results of these different collective explorations, especially to political decision-makers. This project, launched in 2021 for a period of three years, involves ten or so researchers.

The project is coordinated by Dr Mathieu Guillermin (Research group #4).

CARISMA
Christian Anthropology in the Era of Transhumanism and Artificial Intelligence

CArisMA examines the transhumanist utopia and its ambition to control the human body and nature in general, using language that paints a picture of a victory over human limitations and mortality.
The CArisMA project studies the clues that point towards the presence of a Gnostic discourse and epistemology, as presupposed for transhumanist projects. It is a matter of trying to understand the ethical issues and challenges this presents to Christianity, in its philosophical and theological doctrines.

The project is coordinated by Professor Pascal Marin (Research group #1).

PRIORRA
Innovative Social Practices in Management and Environment in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Region

The PrIORRA project (2021 – 2023), funded by the Rhône-Alpes ERDF (European Regional Development Fund), is aimed at studying responsible organisations (companies and their public/private partners) in the Rhône-Alpes region who are trying to simultaneously meet social, environmental, managerial and regional needs.

Through a collaborative action research programme, a team of 25 researchers and experts in the field (UCLy – AEH – CIEDEL) have the role of supporting the organisations identified, supporting them in their
innovative social practices and measuring the impacts of these on their ecosystem.

This project is coordinated by Dr Christopher Melin (Research group #8).

Repurposing industrial by-products through biotechnology solutions

The goal of this four-year-long project, launched in 2020, is to study and implement biotechnology solutions with a view to transitioning to a circular economy. It aims to take by-products or biomass from industry (perfume, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, food processing), and transform them into value-added products. In this way, this new strategy contributes to environmental protection and sustainable development.

This project is coordinated by Dr Marion Garnier and Dr Thanh-Nhat Pham (Research group #7).

ECIE (Economie circulaire en Europe)
Circular economy in Europe

This project aims to analyse the role of the circular economy as a strategic approach to corporate social responsibility. Taking a previous study within the French chemical industry as a starting point, this new
study aims to extend this research to other European countries or other industries in France. Over the four years of the project (2021-2024), the study will attempt to specify the political measures to be taken in the development of the circular economy and also to
establish whether the circular economy requires political measures or sources of information adapted to different countries.

This project is coordintaed by Professor Christian Le Bas, Dr Nabila Arfaoui, Dr Marie-France Vernier and Professor Linh-Chi Vo (Research group #8).

SOCAplatform METAGENOPOLIS (MGP)

The Ethics and Social Acceptability Platform (SOCA) is part of the MetaGenoPolis project funded by the ANR (French National Research Agency). For this project, metagenomics research is being carried out on gut microbiota to demonstrate its role in health and illnesses. Several research institutes are involved, including INRAE (the project coordinator), ICAN and UCLy from 2011 to 2024. The SOCA platform applies its expertise to the philosophical and ethical issues raised by this research work and evaluates the impact of this research on society, as well as its acceptability.

As well as these different projects coordinated by UCLy, several of the Research Center’s research-active staff are also involved in other ANR projects:
• ANR CALOT or The consequences of forced loyalty following a change in authority.
• ANR Egalibex – Freedom of expression and Equal participation.
• ANR SociogrIEF – An Innovative Sociography of Home Education.

This project is coordintaed by Dr Béatrice de Montéra (Research group #5)

La langue francoprovençale - Publication IPG

Pierre Gardette Institute

This center for researching and promoting the languages and cultures of the Rhône-Alpes region is specialised in the study of Franco-Provençal and Occitan dialects and the geographical variations of the French language. Both a training and research institute, it offers a degree on the linguistic and cultural heritage of the Auvergne Rhône-Alpes region. Over its years of research, it has published many scientific works (dictionaries of local patois, collections of songs
and poems, etc.) and it has a well-stocked specialised library available to researchers and students.

The institute’s projects include ALLY (Linguistic and Ethnographic Atlas of Lyon) which has no less than 1,170 maps available online, originally hand-drawn and collated into three volumes. The interactive database Topora is also an invaluable tool since it groups all of the place names of all of the communes of the eight departments of the
Auvergne Rhône-Alpes region together in one place. The centre is directed by Professor Claudine Fréchet and led by Dr Fabio Armand (research cluster 3).

Vulnerability Research

A new research group created at the initiative of UCLy inaugurated in autumn 2021

It will lead an in-depth investigation calling on a diverse range of skills and experiences to enable it to explain the implications of the vulnerability of human life, a vulnerability that everyone is now aware of.

The Vulnerability Research Group will combine fundamental and multi-disciplinary research on the one hand, and a practical approach on the other, in relation to the socio-economic, political and environmental aspects of vulnerability. It will connect academics of different backgrounds with players in the world of business, the economic and socio-political worlds and the Catholic Church.

Its purpose is twofold:

  • to establish the concept of vulnerability in all its forms;
  • to examine these vulnerabilities ‘in context’, combining different fields of knowledge, skills and experiences, thereby tackling contemporary issues while drawing on the cultural traditions we have inherited.

Education and Early Childhood Research Group

This research group offers a philosophical, pedagogical and psychoanalytical approach to early childhood issues and educational and school practices. It was inaugurated in January 2020 for a period of three years with the aim of devising suitable support measures adjusted to the needs of young children and teachers.

This project is coordintaed by Professor Brigitte Blanquet and Dr Christine Bouvier-Müh (Research group #4)

Projects carried out by various UCLy departments, and since 2020 by the CONFLUENCE Sciences and Humanities Research Centre (EA1598). They have produced colloquia, publications and summary documents available in the pages below.

PVIA
Vulnerable People & A.I.

This project, launched in 2019 and due to end in 2022, includes four research teams from four of UCLy’s partner universities (in France and internationally) who set out to study the relationships between vulnerable elderly people and diverse forms of artificial intelligence from an ethics and law perspective.

This project is coordinated by Professor Franck Violet (Research group #6).

Relimig
Religion and Migration

This project, funded by the ANR (2017-2022), brings together 21 researchers belonging to 15 research institutions in France and abroad. The approach is multi-disciplinary; while the focus is on anthropology, the project also draws on sociology, history, geography, languages, political sciences and law. It looks at Catholic migrants from African, Creole, Asian and Latin American societies in France, living in the cities of Lyon and Paris. It questions what role being Catholic plays in the process of social and religious integration.

This project is coordinated by Professor Valérie
Aubourg
